What is a WebRTC leak?

This article will explain what is a WebRTC leak and how it can be fixed

Updated this week

About WebRTC

WebRTC creates direct connections between devices. It can also reveal your real IP address even when you're using a VPN. This is called a WebRTC leak. A leak doesn't expose your activity or browsing history, but it can reveal your true IP address, which may show your approximate location.

How to Fix WebRTC leaks?

Chrome/Edge:

Unfortunately, there are no built-in toggles for WebRTC; thus, a third-party extension could potentially serve as a workaround.

Search for an extension like "WebRTC Control" or "WebRTC Leak Prevent"

Brave/Opera:

  • Menu > Settings > Search "WebRTC."

  • Set to "Disable non-proxied UDP."

  • Restart.

Firefox

  • Type about:config > Accept risk.

  • Search media.peerconnection.enabled > Set to false.

  • Restart.

Tor Browser

  • WebRTC disabled by default—no action needed.

  • Pair with a VPN that blocks WebRTC for full coverage.
