Can’t Connect with WireGuard? Try OpenVPN

This article explains how to successfully connect from restricted locations or environments

While MysteriumVPN recommends Wireguard as default protocol, our OpenVPN option uses TCP which allows users from restricted environments to connect successfully. To do so, follow the steps below:

  • Go to the "Settings" section of the app and select the "Connection" button

  • In the Protocol section, select the OpenVPN protocol

  • Return to the main connection window and try to establish the connection again

Why can't I establish connection with Wireguard?

There are multiple countries which are known to heavily restrict or block VPN traffic while using strict state-controlled internet firewalls. These nations often use Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) to identify and block the high-speed, low-latency traffic characteristics of UDP-based protocols like WireGuard, often forcing users to switch to TCP connections that are easier to mask.
